Southeast Arizona
SNOW??!!! We came to southeastern Arizona to be snowed on?!! Actually it was fun and was gone quickly.
This was during the peak of our *snowstorm* such as it was.
These mountains are called Cochise's Stronghold.
One of the first things we did was to visit the Kartchner Caverns. This is the visitor's center.
Prior to our tour (you NEED reservations) we hiked around the facility on one of their trails.
You are not allowed to take pictures in the caverns. These 3 pics were taken from a brochure.
There are a number of interesting formations.
This is called a shield formation for obvious reasons. It looks like one!
We visited Chiricahua Nat'l Monument. A very interesting place as the next few pics show.
Spires were everywhere and typical of softer stone being washed away from the harder rock.
Its all about balance here. This is Mushroom Rock and it appears to defy gravity.
Susan snapping the pics.
Now how did they get this big rock to balance itself on such a small footprint?
Susan looking good in Chiricahua.
Bisbee was an interesting town built on the sides of the mountains.
Obviously, folks get their excercise here!
Downtown had a lot of interesting older buildings. We caught this street just as the traffic cleared.
If there are stairs, Susan needs to climb. Come on Bill, its only a few hundred feet up.
This was the reward at the top of the stairs. Many of the homes were adorned with interesting items such as this.
The big industry was and is the mining of copper. By Arizona standards this is a small mine.
No trip to southeastern AZ would be complete without going to Tombstone and the OK Corral.
Many of the more infamous residents are buried in Tombstone's Boothill Graveyard.
Here lie the folks who were a little slow on the draw in the OK Corral shootout.
This poor fellow just couldn't get a break.
