La Pine, OR - Jul. 21 - 26, 2008
On July 21 we left Junction City, Oregon heading east over the Cascade Mountains to Wickiup Reservoir to meet our friends, Sheri and Allen for several of days of fishing. We hadn't spent much time with Sheri and Allen recently so we were really looking forward to seeing them. They had arrived at the Gull Point Campground earlier in the afternoon and claimed the neighboring site for us.
Happily, the site provided mid-day sun to our shiny new solar panels and everything worked as advertised. With no electrical hookups, we had to conserve energy, of course, but did not have to deny ourselves much. We are looking forward to doing more boon-docking in the future.
We shared five wonderful days trolling around the lake during the day, sitting around the campfire in the evenings and catching-up. Sheri and Allen sell park models and their business is doing quite well. Consequently, the mornings were spent with Sheri on her Blackberry, Bill and Allen fishing and Susan tramping through the forest. The afternoons we all got together for some serious fishing. Actually, we doubt that anybody would call what we were doing serious.
Serious or not - we caught fish! German brown trout and kokanee salmon met their destiny at the end of our lines. And, since we were lake fishing we got to keep them. We are pleased to report that they were quite tasty - for several meals.
Alas, on Saturday it was time for Sheri and Allen to return to their business in Stockton, California and for us to continue our trek north. We bid adieu to our friends, with a plan to visit them in Baja in late fall; then headed northeast toward Westport, Washington.
