China: Guilin
Li River Cruise vessels - one of these was ours.
During the cruise we saw locals going about their normal business. Must be laundry day.
This is a local taxi. Ya gotta have good balance.
Ok, this is what we are talking about. The karst mountains are striking, even in the haze.
More karst.
A cave along the way.
I think the mountains in the distance were called saddle mountains or something like that.
Water buffalo. Not much to eat there.
Notice a cutout carved in this spire about 2/3 of the way down. It was the local road.
This looks like the local commuter bus. Must be a Monday morning they don't look to happy.
Fisherman with his cormorants. These highly prized birds are trained from birth to catch fish.
These water buffalo look like they have better feeding opportunities than the one above.
Met some friendly tourists (we were told most likely Japanese) going the other direction.
Nice picture of us with the karst mountains in the background.
This is the village of Yangshuo. In the upper left you can see "Wood-fired Pizza". Just like the U.S.
We saw many unusual vehicles while in China. Looks easy to work on.
Must be the local lumber yard. Could this be an opportunity for Home Depot?
We took a golfcart-like ride in the countryside to visit a local farm.
Big trucks would not operate well here.
Locals would rush up to give us picture taking opportunities-for cash. Check out the baby in the basket.
Irrigation is still a bit primitive in this area of the world. Seems to work well enough.
Mosquitoes on motorcycles. Every time we stopped we were prodded to buy something.
A local farm woman demonstrates how they grind soy beans to make tofu.
Produce hung out to dry.
Inside the farmhouse. With electricity comes some more modern items such as TV and satellite access.
One last picture of the karst mountains. What a sight they were!
Cormorants fishing. The light attracts fish and the birds dive to get them.
With a ring around their necks the birds cannot swallow the larger fish.
Our hotel had a waterfall event at night. Quite an amazing amount of water comes down.
Guilin is all about neon at night. Very attractive with reflections off the water.
These are the sun and moon pagodas. Susan got a very nice picture here.
We toured the Reed Flute Caves while in Guilin.
Hmmm... would these be stalactites? Holding "tight" to the ceiling.
This was a beautiful pond of water reflecting the roof of the cave.
After the caves it was off to "cheesy" Elephant Trunk Hill. Guess we had to burn time.
Our talented guide, David, demonstrated his expertise in calligraphy.
