Tucson, AZ
Our site at Rincon Country East RV Resort. Not a large site, but it was a pretty resort.
We were treated to many pretty sunsets and moonrises. Coupled with the warm temps it was like the tropics.
There was a Dillinger Festival going on downtown with a fun reenactment.
Guns were a blazin' and cars a racin'. Must have been a scary time.
Susan caught a picture of the shotgun blast at just the right moment.
After the show we stopped for lunch with our RV neighbors Lynn and Susan.
In addition to the festival there was a display of cars from the Dillinger era.
This is the court where a Dillinger was brought to determine where he would go next.
This is the Pima County Courthouse where Dillinger was brought.
During "Dillinger Days" his actual machine guns are brought out of a vault for viewing.
On a particularly nice day (we had lots). We traveled to Sabino Canyon for a hike.
The hike we wanted to take was up the Canyon a few miles so we took the tram to get to the trailhead.
Along the way we crossed the river a number of times.
The tram dropped us off at the loop in the picture below.
The end of the hike was pretty, but nothing overly special. Often it is more about the walk than the destination.
Another outing took us to Biosphere II. This is the main structure.
Inside the biosphere were carefully engineered climates and plant zones.
While no one lives there full time students still conduct experiments in the facility.
Underneath the Biosphere there was a lot of machinery to keep things running.
This is the inside of an "air lung" at the Biosphere. The entire ceiling would rise and fall over a days time.
Two of these "air lungs" were employed to allow for expanding and contracting air pressures.
After the Biosphere visit we stopped at Catalina State Park for an invigorating hike.
The views make the uphill climbs worth every sweaty step.
We decided to visit the Old Tucson Studios. More than 35 movies were filmed here.
Stagecoach rides were available in front of the Grand Palace Hotel and Saloon.
This stage was used for a humorous demonstration of stunt work. See the guy falling from the tower?
We enjoyed a can-can musical featuring Miss Kitty and her girls in the saloon.
The stagecoach trundles off to the High Chaparral.
This is the head of the "Diamond Back" overcrossing in Tucson.
This unique overcrossing has taunted us to stop and take a picture many times.
You can see the rattler at the end of the overcrossing. Pretty interesting structure.
On another of our hikes in the area, Susan is seen here enjoying the view.
Susan visited the Botanical Gardens and got some nice picture of plants.
Surrounded by thorny plants this rocking chair looks dangerous.
The botanical garden had a nice collection of butterflies too.
This is an unusual "crowned" saguaro cactus.
We visited the Titan II missile silo south of Tucson.
They have a small interpretive area where you wait for the tours to begin.
The Titan II carried a 9 megaton warhead. The red zone reflects what would be obliterated in a blast.
This looks down on the Titan II from the top of the underground silo.
Inside the silo the missile was maintained and monitored constantly.
This is our tour guide and a former commander at the site describing how a launch would have proceeded.
On our way back from the Titan II museum we stopped by the Mission San Xavier del Bac for a picture.
We took a bike ride along the Rialito River Bike Path as one of our last activities in the area.
