Painted Rock, AZ
Susan drives!! She took the wheel between Yuma and Painted Rock and did a great job.
Bill lounges!! However, he has proven many times that he is an expert in this area.
Ancients chat!! Ok, I will stop. There were numerous etchings on the rocks which were in one pile.
The BLM campground where we stayed was remote and quiet and this moonrise was beautiful.
We stayed at Coyote Howls Campground in Why. It was a no frills campground.
Our primary reason for coming to this area was to visit Organ Pipe Cactus Nat'l Monument.
This is an ocotillo bloom and while not rare, it is an infrequent sight in the desert.
Just a nice desert view. The cactus in the middle is called an Organ Pipe for obvious reasons.
Ok swing your partner dosey-doe... hey where did my partner go.
Saguaro cactus have some pretty interesting configurations. This one appears to be juggling.
The desert has a beautiful, albeit thorny attractiveness to it. Not for everyone, but we enjoy it.
We stopped here for lunch along our 21 mile drive through Organ Pipe Cactus NM.
Of course, we went for a hike while we were here. We plan to scale those mountains in the distance.
After a serious ascent we were treated to a spectacular view of the valley from which we climbed.
Just hard to beat the beauty of the desert.
Another great view.
Some of the saguaro cactus grow to be pretty tall.
While in the area we visited the town of Ajo. This is the Immaculate Conception Church in downtown.
Old St. Catherine's Indian Mission is now a museum for mining and the town of Ajo.
Phelps Dodge Open Pit Copper Mine operated until 1985.
