Lake Worth, FL - Jan. 18 - 24, 2010
On January 18th we traveled 120 miles south to John Prince County Park in Lake Worth, just south of, and a world apart from, Palm Beach. John Prince is a beautiful 726-acre county park bordering Lake Osborne in Palm Beach County. The park has extensive walking and biking paths, playgrounds, tennis, golf, soccer, water sports and bird-watching opportunities. Some of the birds we identified were Great Blue, night, yellow crested night herons, egrets, snowy egrets, ibis, limpkins, wood storks, osprey, and eagles. It offers 299 RV/tent sites with full and partial hook-ups.
We had a great stay here, but would have enjoyed it more without the stench of so many animals that had died due to the cold weather. Sadly, we didn't discover a medium-size iguana that had crawled under our rig and died until a couple of days after the event. Not pleasant for anybody involved.
Lake Worth is a pleasant middle-class town just a few miles from Palm Beach - home to the uber-rich with their gated beachfront mansions and yachts. It is quite a stark contrast.
While in Lake Worth we visited the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach. We especially liked her monumental sculpture entitled 'Beings', which was inspired by the hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. After touring the sculpture garden we wandered the charming, narrow, palm lined streets in Ann Norton's neighborhood and walked along lovely Flagler Drive. We then drove south on Ocean Boulevard past the homes of the rich and famous, stopping to stroll along beautiful Delray Beach.
We took one day to travel about 50 miles north to Stuart to visit John White at his Key Lime Café. John was very busy with the lunch rush and taking care of business, but was able to spare some time to visit with us. It was wonderful seeing him again. It always amazes us that individuals we knew as wee children now have children of their own. And surprisingly, we haven't aged at all. Really.
On the way back from Stuart we stopped at the Jupiter Lighthouse, then did some furniture window-shopping at Macy's. We found a few pieces we liked, but they were in Florida.
We are getting so eager to get back to Arizona to see our new home. Just two more stops and five weeks before we head west. On January 25th we moved on to Miami - one stop closer to 'home'.
