Southwest Travels - May 2011
Our summer travel in 2011 started in Sedona, AZ. This was the view from our site at the local Elks Lodge.
Sedona is all about beautiful mountain views.
This is Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village. It is a replica of Guadalajara, a town in Mexico
There was a local "event" during our stay with some local dancers entertaining the visitors.
Susan gets a hand from a visitor who had just flown into the area.
One of our first excursions was to the historical landmark, mining town of Jerome.
On our way up to see the Jerome Grand Hotel we saw these parking blocks. An asylum? Really?
The "Wishing Johns" of Jerome. Those are coins all around the various facilities.
Jerome is best described as eclectic. This alley way with odd items to buy fit right in.
The town's miners would probably have been intrigued by this sign.
On another day, we took a short walk to see Montezuma's Castle a cliff dwelling near Beaver Creek.
On a hike into Oak Creek Canyon we got rained and hailed on. Made for a sloppy hike.
Susan bravely fords the dangerous, high flowing creek. If only she had one more walking stick to cross safely.
Next stop the Grand Canyon. It is indeed grand! The clouds and sun provided many picture opportunities
The canyon is beautiful beyond words.
This is a highly zoomed shot of the Granite Rapid of the Colorado River one mile below.
Awesomeness. The canyon's top 6 layers of rock date back over 330 million years ago.
Visitors can get a great view of the canyon from this vantage point.
Although it is brisk outside, Susan is enjoying the view.
Too
cool
for
words.

Back up some more? Are you sure Susan? Isn't this good enough?
Nope, keep going.
Below you can see part of the Bright Angel trail we hiked.
At the other end of the South Rim is the South Kaibab trail. We hiked this trail on a previous trip to Grand Canyon.
It is amazing how trees can grow right out of the rocks.
A hike in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Santa Fe.
Bill played golf at the Black Mesa Golf Course in Espanola north of Santa Fe. A very challenging course.
While in the area we visited the Pecos National Historic Park. This is one of the mission churches.
Susan is coming out of a reconstructed kiva. They were used for religious rituals.
